Chemists use relative atomic masses to compare the masses of atoms since actual atomic masses are extremely small. Relative atomic masses are determined using mass spectrometry which separates isotopes based on their mass-to-charge ratio. The average relative atomic mass (Ar) of an element is calculated by taking the weighted average of the relative isotopic masses and their natural abundances.
