The periodontal ligament is a dense connective tissue that attaches the tooth to the alveolar bone. It contains collagen fibers that insert into the cementum and alveolar bone. The principal fiber groups resist different forces on the tooth. The periodontal ligament also contains fibroblasts, cementoblasts, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, epithelial cells, macrophages, and nerves that have sensory and supportive functions. It has a blood supply from the alveolar arteries and helps nutriture the tooth.
