Mount Etna is a 3,340 meter tall stratovolcano located on the east coast of Sicily, Italy. It formed at the boundary where the African tectonic plate is pushed under the Eurasian plate. The volcano is composed primarily of trachybasalt, tephrite basanite, trachyandesite, and basalt. Mount Etna has a long history of eruptions dating back to 1500 BCE and represents an important location for volcanological research.
