What is Mao about?

Mao Zedong ordered all sparrows killed in China in 1958 because he believed they ate too much grain and inhibited economic development. This led to an ecological disaster as insect populations exploded with no sparrows to control them, destroying grain crops and causing a three year famine where 45 million Chinese people starved to death. Mao later ended the anti-sparrow campaign as it was counterproductive, but the damage was already done.
