What is Understanding Past Continuous Tense about?

The past continuous tense describes actions or events that were ongoing or in progress at a specific time in the past. It is formed using was/were + verb+ing. It can be used: 1) With time expressions like "when" to show that one ongoing action was interrupted by another action that occurred at the same time (e.g. "They were eating lunch when they heard about the assassination"). 2) With "while" which has a similar meaning to "when" (e.g. "While they were eating lunch, they heard about the assassination").
