Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong was an American jazz trumpeter, cornetist, and singer born in 1901 and died in 1971. He was most famous for his improvisational skills and was influenced early in his career by his mentor Joe "King" Oliver. Armstrong played Dixieland jazz and also switched from cornet to trumpet when he returned to Chicago. He was renowned as a trumpeter, scat singer, and innovator of jazz and swing music.
