John Duns Scotus was a 13th century Franciscan friar and philosopher born in Scotland who taught at Oxford University and later in Paris. He is known for his rigorous and intricate arguments. A major work was arguing against rationalist philosophers for the necessity of divine revelation. He argued for the Immaculate Conception of Mary and the univocity of being, meaning attributes can be used in the same sense for God and creatures. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1993.
