The Navy developed an upgraded Mk 54 Lightweight Torpedo (BUG) software to address an urgent operational need. Testing of the BUG showed it has limited capability against the threat. Further testing is needed to evaluate its performance against different target types and scenarios. The Navy conducted initial operational testing of the BUG in 2012 but more testing is planned for 2013. The BUG software was intended to improve torpedo capabilities but was accelerated to address the urgent need.
