The Save Darfur Coalition welcomed the UN Security Council’s recent unanimous decision to extend the UNAMID peacekeeping force’s mandate for one year.In particular, the coalition praised the Council’s emphasis that the force’s primary responsibility is to protect civilians in Darfur. After condemning the recent surge in violence in the region, the United States and other UN Security Council members must now work to ensure that UNAMID is able to operate freely and securely throughout Darfur.
