Elizabeth Keckley was born into slavery in Virginia in 1818. She began working for her master, Mr. Burwell, at age four, helping with his baby. When the baby fell from her bed and Mr. Burwell blamed and hit her, she began to dislike her job. Mr. Burwell later sold another slave, Joe, and Elizabeth never saw him again. At age fourteen, Elizabeth was sent to work for Mr. Burwell
