What is Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Carburization/Decarburization of Nickel and Low-Chromium Ni - Cr Alloys in CH~4~-H~2~/H~2~Atmospheres at High Temperatures about?
The thermodynamics and kinetics of carburization and decarburization of polycrystalline Niand Ni -Cralloys (Crcontent = 13.1 wt.%) in CH4-H> or H2 atmospheres, respectively, have been studied at temperatures between 1150 to 1400 K and carbon activities between 0.2 and 0.5. The experiments were carried out in a flow-apparatus applying the resistancerelaxation technique. Using thin samples with 5 um thickness and establishing high linear gas flow rates of1m -s"', carburization and decarburization are controlled by surface reaction steps. Different reaction steps are found to be ratedetermining in the low temperature ( 1320 K) range. The effective rate constants and the experimental activation energies of carburization and decarburization exhibit a relatively small dependence on the chromium concentration ofthe Ni -Cralloys. The thermodynamic quantities related to the solution of carbon in equilibrium with CH4-H» mixtures or graphite, respectively, show also only small changes by passing from Ni to Ni-5.4 Cr, Ni-8Cr and Ni-13.1 Cr alloys.
