Tunnel boring machines are being used to excavate tunnels in Andhra Pradesh, India for irrigation projects. Two projects - the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project and Veligonda Project - will transfer water 43.9 km and 19.2 km respectively through bored tunnels to irrigate farmland. The geology of the areas consists of quartzite and granite rocks. Three double shield tunnel boring machines were selected to excavate the tunnels due to the long lengths and stable rock conditions.
