This book offers a re-assessment of the French nineteenth-century artist, Paul Delaroche. In the artist’s own time, his work was widely known and lauded by public and critics alike. However, its very popularity was instrumental in its exclusion from an art-historical canon that privileged avant garde qualities of difficulty and stylistic innovation over the supposed instant legibility and general accessibility of Delaroche’s painting. Revisionist scholarship has sought to secure a position for Delaroche in the tradition of French history painting; this book builds on these studies, but focuses on the artist’s popularity with the newly expanded, more socially diverse audiences of the 1820s and 1830s. Lacking in specialist knowledge, but nevertheless keen to engage with and deeply affected by art, the behaviour of this new public prompted lively discussions about who has the right to judge art and on what grounds.
