Fresh evidence seems consistently appearing about the domestic circumstances of William Shakespeare, but none of it has much to do with his literary skills. As the authors of a recent study admit: 'the hard facts we know about Shakespeare do not amount to much more than a rhyming couplet' (Jones and Guy 2005), while Germaine Greer, in Shakespeare's Wife , 2007, despairingly acknowledged that: 'all biographies of Shakespeare are houses built of straw'. He was the unrivalled poet of his day and author of a half-dozen plays prefiguring those of Shakespeare, while several plays have been attributed to both authors. The case for Marlowe, as the author of the entire canon, is compelling, but for Marlowe's supposed death at the early age of 29.
