Regulation of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) in E. coli was examined using sdhC-lacZ operon fusions. SDH is essential for the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and aerobic respiration. Expression of sdhC-lacZ was highest under aerobic conditions and decreased 10-fold under anaerobic conditions. The ArcA and Fnr regulatory proteins were found to repress sdhC-lacZ expression under anaerobic conditions.
