What is Recent Advances in (Oxy)sulfide Photocatalysts for Solar-driven Water Splitting and CO2 Reduction about?
Photocatalytic water splitting into H 2 and O 2 , and CO 2 reduction accompanied by water oxidation to O 2 can be classified as artificial photosynthetic reactions in terms of photon to chemical energy conversion. Using a wide range of visible light in sunlight is required for photocatalyst materials to achieve highly efficient artificial photosynthesis. The most famous and traditional material group used as photocatalysts is metal oxides. The band structure of a typical metal oxide is shown in Figure .1(a). Metal oxides generally possess deep valence bands composed of O 2p orbitals at around +3.0 V vs. NHE at pH 0. 5 When the metal oxide possesses photocatalytic ability for water reduction to produce H 2 , its conduction band should be located at equal to or more negative than 0 V vs. NHE at pH 0.
