The first light was built in 1764 and since then greatly improved and added to. During the Revolutionary War two officers and twelve men from the Royal Navy died in a blizzard on Sandy Hook when searching for deserters. It wasn't until 1857 that actual fortifications were first constructed. The Sandy Hook Proving Ground was established in 1874. In World War I Fort Hancock sent the First Trench Mortar Battalion and the 56h Artillery to France. During the 1960's Fort Hancock was the home of the 4th Missile Battalion of the 52nd Artillery Brigade (Air Defense), and of a Coast Guard station.
