What is Emma Lazarus and The New Colossus about?

Emma Lazarus was born into a wealthy Jewish family in 1849 in New York City. She became a prolific writer and poet, with her works often inspired by current events. Her most famous poem is "The New Colossus," written in 1883 for a fundraising event to build the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.
