What is Economic Impact of Biofouling on DDG-51 about?
This study analyzed the economic impact of biofouling on U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (DDG-51). It found that the primary cost associated with biofouling is increased fuel consumption due to increased frictional drag from hull roughness. For current Navy coating, cleaning, and fouling levels, the total annual cost of biofouling for the DDG-51 class was estimated to be $56 million per year or $1 billion over 15 years. The results provide guidance on how much should be invested in new technologies
