The title page of this work lists twelve other names belonging to the scholars of various nationalities, who have collaborated under the leadership of Robert E. Lerner and Pavlína Rychterová to bring this book into being and thereby to carry out a research project financed by the European Research Council. The work is the fruit of a large-scale investigation into a series of late medieval translations of one and the same Latin treatise, which goes under the name of the French philosopher and theologian John of Rupescissa (Jean de Roquetaillade, 1310-1366). The project, which aimed at a study and textual-critical edition of these translations, formed part of a broader programme of research, called 'Origins of the Vernacular Mode.' This title sounds rather general, for it does not mention that the framers of the programme were concerned to investigate the emergence of the European vernaculars by studying religious literature. Their choice explains why Rupescissa's treatise Vade mecum in tribulatione fell within the scope of the programme, for this religious work enjoyed an unusually wide geographical diffusion in the later Middle Ages.
