This study characterized the spatial distribution and concentrations of metals in sediments along the British Columbia coast, which serves as important habitat for endangered southern resident killer whales and their main prey, Chinook salmon. Samples from 98 sites found elevated levels of mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, copper, and lead in certain areas that could indirectly threaten killer whales and salmon populations through toxicity to their prey.
