A farmer applied fertilizer containing ammonium nitrate to a wheat field. Some of the fertilizer washed into a nearby river, causing eutrophication. Eutrophication led to increased numbers of algae and bacteria in the river as they benefited from the excess nutrients. The increased algae and bacteria depleted oxygen levels in the river. Fish numbers initially increased as their food source grew but then declined as oxygen levels fell too low for the fish to survive.
