Large-scale and small-scale fading both impact radio signal propagation. Large-scale fading is mainly caused by attenuation and shadowing over large areas. Small-scale fading occurs over small distances and times due to multipath propagation and Doppler shifts creating constructive and destructive interference. This can result in rapid fluctuations in signal strength known as fading. The delay spread caused by multipath propagation can also cause intersymbol interference at receivers.
