Selim Hassan (1887-1961) was an Egyptian Egyptologist and archaeologist who is best known for his excavations at the Giza pyramid complex. He was first, the first prominent native Egyptian archaeologist in his country, as a field had been dominated by Europeans up to that point. Hassan studied at the University of Cairo and then at the University of Liverpool in England. He returned to Egypt and joined the Antiquities Service, where he began his career as an inspector of antiquities. In 1929, following on the heels of Émile Baraize (see Part 3), he began working on the Plateau, and over the next decade, he conducted extensive excavations at the site. Hassan's excavations at Giza were some of the most extensive ever conducted at the site, at least until Lehner's and Hawass's work in the early 2000s, and he made a number of important discoveries. This included the tomb of Queen Hetepheres, the mother of King Khufu, the builder of the Great Pyramid. The tomb contained a number of important artifacts including a small Sphinx statue.
