This document discusses using microwave irradiation in a model Biginelli reaction to synthesize 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones. Preliminary experiments showed that at high temperatures, the desired product yields were low and unwanted byproducts formed. Lower reaction temperatures gave higher yields of the desired product and less byproducts. The combination of hydrochloric acid and high temperature microwave irradiation was found to decompose starting materials and lead to unknown byproducts.
