What is OTOP1 Channel: Ammonium Taste Sensor about?
1) The proton channel OTOP1, which is expressed in sour taste receptor cells, functions as a sensor for ammonium chloride (NH4Cl). 2) Extracellular NH4Cl evoked large currents in cells expressing OTOP1, correlating with its ability to raise intracellular pH. 3) Mice lacking a functional OTOP1 channel showed strongly attenuated or eliminated taste responses to NH4Cl from isolated taste cells and gustatory nerves, as well as abolished behavioral aversion to NH4Cl.
