What is Ilopango Volcano about?

- A massive eruption of Ilopango volcano in El Salvador around AD 536 may have triggered a period of global cooling. New evidence shows the eruption was even larger than previously believed, ejecting 84 cubic km of ash into the atmosphere. This could have blocked the sun for over a year, causing the documented crop failures and famines of AD 535-536. Radiocarbon dating of a tree killed in the eruption dates it to AD 450-545, providing strong evidence that Ilopango was responsible for the major climate event
