A notable twentieth-century feminist and educator, Mary Ingraham Bunting (1910-1998) was president of Radcliffe College during the tempestuous sixties, dean of Douglass College, special assistant to the president of Princeton, and the first woman to serve on the Atomic Energy Commission. She was also a respected microbiologist who did ground-breaking research at Yale. Above all, she is important because she was one of the first to perceive, and come up with remedies for, the ways in which American society was stifling women's aspirations and thwarting their achievements. <p>This book describes not only Bunting's public activities, but also the personal tragedy that compelled her, in mid-career, to reinvent herself radically, to embark on an entirely new way of life. The author was entrusted with Bunting's diaries, letters, and private papers, and interviewed over a hundred people-family members, friends, and former colleagues.
