## Significance Feeding the growing global population of approximately 2 billion by 2050 requires a profound transformation of the current agriculture system. While current farming practices rely heavily on nitrogen fertilizers, natural nitrification processes lead to nutrient loss and nitrate pollution. Excess nitrate in water can contribute to environmental problems, including eutrophication and health hazards. Nitrate pollution is also the source of nitrous oxide production and other greenhouse gases, which could impact carbon cycling and exacerbate climate change. Electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion has been recognized as an alternative strategy to produce nitrogen fertilizer from polluted groundwater and industrial waste streams with high environmental sustainability. This work reports an electrocatalysis-enabled system for smart and precisely concentration-controlled nitrogen nutrient recycling via electrifying nitrate-rich wastewaters.
