This chapter reviews general principles of substance use disorders (SUD). These principles include the defining traits of SUD, including compulsions, loss of control, adverse consequences, and craving; organizing the diagnostic criteria for SUD and behavioral addiction as listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th Edition. We will further discuss the American Society of Addiction Medicine patient placement criteria and how they relate to SUD severity. Finally, we discuss epidemiological principles in SUD, pharmacokinetics and review the various scales used to assess SUD.
