About this document
Understanding BGP: Inter-AS Routing Basics by Hassaan Rasheed FAST NU LHR is a document available to read on EtoBox.
BGP is the primary inter-domain routing protocol used on the internet. It allows each autonomous system (AS) to learn reachable IP prefixes from neighboring ASes using eBGP, and propagate this information within the AS using iBGP. Routers use BGP attributes like AS-PATH and NEXT-HOP along with policies to select the best routes to other networks and populate their forwarding tables. This allows all networks to learn reachability and route traffic across the global internet.
