Bienvenido Lumbrera was a Filipino poet, literary critic, scholar, and librettist born in 1932 in Batangas. He studied at the University of Santo Tomas and earned a PhD from the University of Indiana. As a professor at Ateneo de Manila University, he established himself as a leading scholar of Tagalog literature and introduced a new aesthetic known as "Bagay Poetry." However, he published primarily in English. During Martial Law, he went underground and was imprisoned from 1974-1977. He received many awards
