The problem of multiple scattering of light by a layer of discrete random medium is considered. The medium is supposed to be rareÿed with scatterers randomly positioned in the layer. Backscattering of light incident normal to the plane of the layer is considered. The scattering matrix is presented as a sum of three matrices, one of them corresponding to incoherent scattering of light and di erence of the other two matrices describing coherent scattering. Equations for the calculation of these matrices are given.
