Henri Matisse began making collages in his seventies when he was in poor health and could no longer draw or paint easily. He would cut simple shapes and forms from brightly colored paper and arrange them on sheets, gluing them together. Matisse created collages by cutting paper shapes and arranging them in different compositions on sheets until he found an arrangement he liked, at which point he would glue the pieces in place.
