What is Understanding the Respiratory System about?

The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide. Air enters through the nose or mouth and travels through the windpipe into bronchial tubes and bronchioles, ending in alveoli where oxygen passes into blood and carbon dioxide leaves. The diaphragm contracts on inhalation to create a vacuum pulling air in, and relaxes on exhalation to push air out. Cilia and mucus in the nose and airways help filter out harmful particles which can then be coughed or swallowed out of the lungs.
