What is Animal Marking : Recognition Marking of Animals in Research about?
The Wild Animal Advisory Committee of the R.S.P.C.A. meets several times a year to consider comments received by the Society on a wide range of wildlife management practices in which cruelty may be, or is claimed to be, involved. In addition, the Committee looks into a number of topics at its own initiative. At these sessions expert advice and comment is frequently invited which, together with the expertise within the Committee, provides a basis for recommendation to the Council of the Society. Examples of topics that have been discussed are rabies, use of strychnine to poison moles, management of seals and the status of the otter. It was at a meeting in late 1976 that a discussion on recognition marking of animals for research was first proposed. As this possibility was explored in more detail it soon became apparent that the Committee would be embarking on a very wide subject which, in order to give it the full treatment it merited, necessitated reference to a far wider range of experience than existed within the Wild Animals Advisory Committee.
