Analyzing over 200 travel narratives published by British men and women between c.1750 and c.1800, British Travel Writers in Europe 1750-1800 argues that these writings represent an important, and hitherto neglected, body of work. In Turner's new evaluation of these narratives, she sheds new light not only on eighteenth-century culture and literature, but also on “high Romantic” uses and constructions of travel. The key elements which emerge from the material are, in close mutual relationship: narrative self-construction within the travelogue, in relation to notions of English eccentricity, liberty, and virtue; conflict between xenophobic national self-definition in opposition to the Continental “other”; the implications of gender, particularly in the context of growing numbers of women travel writers, but also with reference to “manliness” as a desirable British quality; and politics-travel writing perhaps more than any other genre gave voice to hundreds of writers across the ideological spectrum, and became a vehicle for the expression of views on domestic as well as foreign affairs.
