What is Newborn Hearing Screening & Ear Fluid about?
Middle ear fluid is a very common cause of failed newborn hearing screens, present in about 6 out of 10 cases. The fluid often resolves on its own in the first few months but may require medical intervention. While the fluid is the most frequent reason for failed screens, 10% of children may still have permanent hearing loss and require further testing even after the fluid is gone.
