Rizal went to Paris and Germany from 1885-1887 to study ophthalmology. In Paris, he worked as an assistant to a famous French oculist. He then traveled to Germany, first living in Heidelberg where he joined a chess club at the university. He also spent time in Wilhelmsfeld with a Protestant pastor and studied in Leipzig and Dresden. In Berlin, Rizal was welcomed in scientific circles and associated with prominent German scientists and scholars. However, he experienced his darkest winter there due to poverty
