What is Barzani Jewish Neo-Aramaic Language about?
Barzani Jewish Neo-Aramaic was a dialect of Aramaic originally spoken in three villages near Aqrah, Iraq. It was brought to Israel in 1951 by eight families from Bijil who resettled in the new Jewish state. By 1998, the last native speaker had died, leaving only a few second-language speakers over 70 years old living in Israel. The language is now effectively extinct, though it was related to other Neo-Aramaic dialects spoken in northern Iraq, eastern Turkey, and northwestern Iran.
