A new method developed by MIT graduate student Alex Kachkine allows for the physical restoration of damaged paintings using AI-generated masks that can be applied and removed easily. This technique significantly speeds up the restoration process, completing tasks in just hours compared to traditional methods that can take years. The approach also preserves a digital record of the restoration, enabling future conservators to understand the changes made to the artwork.
