What is Inflation and Deflation of Rubber Dam about?
Inflatable weirs, also known as rubber dams, are flexible elliptical structures made of rubberized material attached to a rigid concrete base and inflated by air, water, or a combination of air and water. Those are made of durable fabric and are pressurized by air, water, or a combination of both. After rubber dam is inflated, it serves as weir. Deflation of rubber dam during floods helps to flush out sediments automatically and prevents the damage due to flood. Rubber dams are simple, reliable, and flexible structure resulting in wide range of application in hydropower, irrigation, and flood control and water resource management. The objective of this chapter is to provide the details of inflation and deflation, hydraulics and structural design of rubber dam. The details of installation of rubber dam are also given. Optimization of suitable inflation/deflation mechanism as well as and details of safe and user-friendly operation are also discussed in this chapter. Problems associated with inflation and deflation and their mitigation is also provided.
