The Grand Palace complex is located in Bangkok and began construction in 1782 when the capital was moved from Thonburi. It covers 218,400 square meters and its layout is similar to the palace in Ayutthaya, with Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) on the east side. The Emerald Buddha is actually made of jade. From the 18th century to mid-20th century, the Grand Palace served as the official royal residence and office, but is now only used for ceremonial purposes.
