The Partition of Bengal in 1905 divided the Bengal province of British India along religious lines. It sparked major protests from Hindus, but was welcomed by Muslims who felt marginalized in the united province dominated by Hindus. However, after just 6 years, the partition was annulled in 1911 due to strong Hindu opposition. This gave Muslims a new sense of seeking political rights separate from Hindu-dominated areas.
