This article analyzes capital budgeting practices in large Canadian firms through a survey of 88 companies. It finds that while discounted cash flow analysis is widely used, some firms do not properly apply the techniques. Only 17% of firms did not use DCF at all. Of those that did, most favored net present value and internal rate of return. However, between 10-33% were incorrectly applying aspects of DCF such as using the weighted average cost of capital.
