The Caribe Hilton resort in Puerto Rico is credited as the birthplace of the Piña Colada cocktail in 1954, when bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero spent three months experimenting with recipes before settling on one that captured the true flavors of Puerto Rico using rum, coconut cream, heavy cream and pineapple juice. Marrero served the Piña Colada at the Caribe Hilton for 35 years until Puerto Rico named it the official national drink in 1978 in recognition of its creation there.
