Survival of a Gram-negative, 2.4~dimethylphenol-degrading bacterium was reduced from 30% to 3% as a result of exposure to 02 for 10 min after lyophilization. Freezing the cells in argon prior to lyophilization increased the survival rate to 100% when cells were not exposed to 0 after lyophilization. Although high survival rates could be achieved, metabolic damage resu ted in ? incomplete metabolization of 2,4-dimethylphenol.
