What is Coevolution about?
Every biologist since Darwin and Wallace has recognized that ecological interactions among species have an important influence on their evolution. Until recently there has been little attempt to develop explicit models of the evolution of these interactions. In the past several decades, however, such models have begun to emerge. The evolutionary consequences of interactions among species are now a major area of inquiry, as are the consequences of evolutionary change for the structure of ecological communities. Serving as a complement to the formal theory, evolutionary studies of ecological interactions among populations have come to constitute a major theme in field and laboratory studies as well. Studies of plants and their herbivores, pollinators, and seed dispersers, of hosts and their parasites and pathogens, of predators and their prey, and of mutualists and competitors now commonly take an evolutionary, as well as the more traditional ecological approach.Coevolution took form as we came to realize that the principles which these different coevolving systems may have in common have hardly been explored; that the literatures of parasitology, of phytopathology, and of insect-pla
