What is Santiago about?

Santiago is an aging Cuban fisherman who has gone 84 days without catching a fish, facing ridicule in his village. However, on the 85th day he catches an enormous marlin after a grueling 3-day struggle, only to have it devoured by sharks before reaching home. Though defeated, Santiago finds renewed pride and purpose. He dreams again of lions playing on African beaches, and agrees to fish again with his devoted apprentice Manolin.
