About this document

Red Heat Temperature Ranges for Steel by Cayix is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Long before thermometers, blacksmiths determined the temperature of ferrous metals by their color, known as "red heat." The color indicated the optimal temperature for processes like heat treating. Common colors were black red (426-593°C), very dark red (593-704°C), dark red (704-814°C), and cherry red (815-870°C). In 1905, Stirling Consolidated Boiler Company published similar but slightly different temperature ranges for colors including red, dull red, and dull cherry red.
